In addition, each student must complete a 2-3 unit pre- or co-requisite course of his or her choice from the designated list below. Minimum 2.8 GPA. Enrollment is limited to 60 students each semester. Satisfies professional skills requirement. CLASSROOM COMPONENT (1 Unit, graded pass-fail) The Judicial Externship classroom component consists of a mandatory two day orientation and ongoing supervision by the faculty supervisor. The orientation takes place at Hastings during the two business days preceding the first day of classes for the semester and is announced in the course schedule. The ongoing supervision requires students to keep a journal during their placement and to be in contact with the faculty supervisor several times during the semester. This contact may be by telephone or e-mail if the student(s fieldwork is outside of the Bay Area. For fall 2012, the mandatory orientation days are August 16th & 17th. For spring 2013, the mandatory orientation days are January 8th & 9th. PLACEMENT tc \l2 " (3 to 9 Units, graded pass-fail. Placement units count against non-classroom 18 unit cap.) All judicial externships for credit are open to 4th, 5th, and 6th semester students. Students may earn up to 9 units of non-classroom credit by working as externs at any level of state or federal courts and at some selected administrative agency tribunals. Students may extern part-time and earn between 3 and 8 units of fieldwork credit, computed at the rate of one unit for every 45 hours of work. If the externship does not afford a substantial research and writing experience or is with a court of limited jurisdiction, the maximum number of units which may be earned is 5 (the maximum number of units for criminal court and externships with administrative law judges is 5). Full-time externs may earn 9 units (for a minimum of 12 weeks and a minimum of 35 hours per week). Students may extern anywhere in California; externships outside California require advanced permission from Professor Stuart. Interested students should inquire at the Externships and Pro Bono Programs Office early in the semester prior to the semester or summer during which they would like to extern. It is helpful to review the surveys of prior externs experiences available in the externship office. Group meetings about the program(s requirements are held periodically. A student who accepts a judicial externship position may not withdraw to take a position with another judge or court. A student who wishes to enroll more than once in a judicial externship will be given last priority for purposes of the enrollment limitation and must participate again in the supervision aspects of the classroom component without unit credit (but need not attend the orientation again). DESIGNATED PRE- OR CO-REQUISITE COURSES FOR JUDICIAL EXTERNS:tc \l2 " Any one of the following courses will satisfy this requirement: Advanced Criminal Law Seminar, Advanced Legal Research, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Settlement, Capital Punishment Seminar, Class Actions Seminar, Criminal Punishment Seminar, Judicial Process Seminar, Negotiation & Mediation: Process & Practice, Negotiations and Settlement, Pretrial Practice, Problem Solving & Professional Judgment, Roles & Ethics in Practice, Trial Advocacy I or II, Trial Objections. How do I apply for a judicial externship? A. Many U.S. District Judges and Magistrate Judges in the Northern District of California now accept electronic applications. Go to the Northern District home page www.cand.uscourts.gov and click on Career Opportunities (on the left side of the page, then click on Applying for Judicial Externships). If the judge you are interested in indicates a preference for a paper application, do not apply to this judge on-line. Additional application information is available on the Hastings website at: HYPERLINK "http://www.uchastings.edu/academics/clinical-programs/judicial-externs/index.html" http://www.uchastings.edu/academics/clinical-programs/judicial-externs/index.html. To submit a paper application, students should prepare a set of the following materials for each judge to whom they wish to apply: a cover letter, resume, writing sample (5-10 pages), updated transcript (unofficial will suffice), and names, addresses, and phone numbers of 3 professional references (preferably lawyers and/or law professors). The Externships and Pro Bono Programs Office will provide envelopes and labels for up to 10 applications which students will hand-deliver or mail to the courts themselves. If the judges want to interview a student, they will contact the student directly. %&'m. 9 R r " . / 6 C ; c l # ) - W üõÜvlhh^ZVZh& UhuoC j=hc'huJhRhc'huJ6]hhhuJ56]h@>56]h@>hhhu hc'huJhc'huJ5:\ h5\ hu5\ hls5\ hA35\hc'huJ5\hc'huJ<CJaJ#jhc'huJ<CJUaJhc'huJCJaJhc'CJaJ!' % { | 1$gdc'1$1$1$$1$gd$1$$1$W ` b g i k p " = H U V X [ ] ^ d f g (5;24fh'0c޾޷ޜޔޘޘޔޔޔڐhhuhuoC hc'huoCht<hht<H*hc'ht<H* hc'ht<h+Whc'huJ<jhc'huJ<UhR hc'huJ h& Uh& Uh& Uh& Uh& U5H* h& U5812\kCP\dlv -@Yu%<=FG[zǽﶯhuoCht< h5\h hc'hc'hJe] h5hJe]hH\ h5h5 h5huJhc'huJ5\hc'hc'5hc'huJ<jhc'huJ<Uhc'huJ hc'huJ j=hc'huJ3 @uG_a ) p@ P !1$! ) p@ P !01$^`01$1$Yn|YZd} Z[^bems.8u"deѿն򪮪huJOJQJ^JhXhRhJe]h5?h~P0Jjh~PU h~Ph~Ph~Pjh~PUht<hhc'huJ0Jhc' hc'huJ hc'huoC3 ) p@ P !1$50P:pc'/ =!"#$8% 8 00P:p/ =!"#$% DyK Rhttp://www.uchastings.edu/academics/clinical-programs/judicial-externs/index.htmlyK http://www.uchastings.edu/academics/clinical-programs/judicial-externs/index.htmlyX;H,]ą'cL@L Normal1$7$8$H$CJ_HaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k(No List <&@< Footnote ReferenceFOF WP_Heading 15:CJ \aJ 4O4 WP_Body Text8Q@"8 Body Text 35\>O2> WP_Heading 2 5:\6OA6 Hypertext >*B*ph6U@Q6 c' Hyperlink >*B*phFV@aF FollowedHyperlink >*B*ph 070'%{| @uG_a000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000W ZX8@0( B S ? a_Toc84239114 a_Toc84239115 a_Toc84239117 _Hlt285441662 _Hlt285441663 ++@@ ,, 5uJH\uH@\\ipp://10.200.1.127\Outplacement-HP2200Ne03:winspoolHP LaserJet 2200 Series PCL 6\\ipp://10.200.1.127\Outplacem?dXXLetter.HP LaserJet 2200 Series PCL 6t25xePM/CQsZD͢@-y -ERXXH$65GQۘřsz:nNI&m&Ig s),t2@{(Ppهm8I$ lڋf"rDM$5*Zj)t rK)RZe4kN+'EM)Bpk$v[!cPkf#f@l跚?Tb$<9b)7Z1rx+t9K2n;WP3 Xȓf!]7aW8N\\ipp://10.200.1.127\Outplacem?dXXLetter.HP LaserJet 2200 Series PCL 6t25xePM/CQsZD͢@-y -ERXXH$65GQۘřsz:nNI&m&Ig s),t2@{(Ppهm8I$ lڋf"rDM$5*Zj)t rK)RZe4kN+'EM)Bpk$v[!cPkf#f@l跚?Tb$<9b)7Z1rx+t9K2n;WP3 Xȓf!]7aW8N66Ă66@@UnknownGz Times New Roman5Symbol3& z ArialSWP TypographicSymbols5Shruti" h3'3'ukFdW )dW )! xxrd2Q (?uJ2JUDICIAL EXTERNSHIP PROGRAMstuartn AdministratorOh+'0 $0 P \ h tJUDICIAL EXTERNSHIP PROGRAMstuartn Normal.dotAdministrator3Microsoft Office Word@F#@_r@,@dW՜.+,D՜.+,H hp| ) ' JUDICIAL EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM Title$ 8@ _PID_HLINKSAPSRhttp://www.uchastings.edu/academics/clinical-programs/judicial-externs/index.html: "#$%&'()*+,-./013456789;<=>?@ADRoot Entry F@ FData 1Table!!WordDocumentq0SummaryInformation(2DocumentSummaryInformation8:CompObjq FMicrosoft Office Word Document MSWordDocWord.Document.89q
