Professor Shapell has taught California Civil Procedure at UC Hastings since 1997. She is a co-author of the second (2005), third (2008), and fourth (2011) editions of Cases and Materials on California Civil Procedure. She is also the co-author of the first (2008) and second (2012) editions of California Civil Procedure for West's Sum and Substance Quick Review outline series. In addition, she prepares and updates California Civil Procedure outline materials for BarBri.
Before teaching at UC Hastings, Professor Shapell worked as a research attorney for the San Mateo County Superior Court, focusing primarily on civil law and motion and appellate matters. She also practiced civil litigation for several years at Heller Ehrman in San Francisco. She has also taught Legal Research and Writing at UC Hastings and the University of San Francisco School of Law.
Professor Shapell received her B.A. in 1973 from the University of California, Santa Barbara, her M.P.H. in 1978 from the University of California, Berkeley, and her J.D. in 1984 from UC Hastings.
