Exchange / Study Abroad Programs Offered in Cooperation with UC Hastings Exchange Partner Schools

Second and third year J.D. students may apply to study abroad through one of our faculty-approved exchange programs.  Hastings has foreign exchange/study abroad programs in Argentina, Australia, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel (pending), Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.  In addition, we offer an exchange program with the Vermont Law School (Royalton, Vermont) which specializes in environmental law. Participating students may transfer up to 12 credits from any of these programs (except Vermont which allows for the transfer of up to 16 transfer credits), pending receipt of an official transcript from the exchange school verifying that all necessary coursework was completed, evaluated and passed.

Important to Note:

  • Deadline to apply for faculty-approved foreign exchange/study abroad programs: February 1 for the following academic year.
  • Applications are submitted to the Graduate and International Programs Office in Room 310 of 200 McAllister.

Independent Study Abroad

Under special circumstances, a second or third year J.D. student may submit a proposal for an independent study abroad program. For independent study abroad, a student must: (1)  establish a compelling justification for pursuing study at the proposed school, as determined by the Academic Dean; and 2)  arrange an independent study program at a foreign law school under terms and conditions approved by the Academic Dean and the Associate Dean for International and Graduate Programs. A student who arranges an approved independent study program at a foreign law school may transfer a maximum of 12 semester units for which a passing grade was earned at the other school.  A student may not arrange an independent study program at a foreign law school where Hastings has an existing faculty-approved exchange program or study-abroad opportunity.

Important to Note:

  • Independent study abroad proposals are submitted to the International and Graduate Programs Office in Room 310 of 200 McAllister. Deadlines to apply: November 1 for Spring; June 1 for Fall.
