Appellate Advocacy

Appellate Advocacy is an upper class course which provides second and third year students with the opportunity to write an appellate brief and present oral arguments. The course focuses on appellate theory, standard of review, advanced appellate brief writing, and the art of appellate oral argument. Students receive two academic credits for the course. In addition, completion of Appellate Advocacy satisfies the Professional Skills graduation requirement.

Each year, the course focuses on a currently pending court case. Students work in two-person teams to write a complete appellate brief.  At the end of the semester, the teams present an oral argument to a three-judge panel.

The Appellate Advocacy course is a requirement for participation on the Hastings Moot Court Competition Team and student board. It also serves as the basis for the annual Hastings David E. Snodgrass Intramural Moot Court Competition.
