JuDicial exTernshiPs Through the Judicial Externship Program, more than 100 students work full- or part-time annually in state and federal judicial chambers. The for-credit extern- ships, available to students beginning in their second year, help them improve analytical, research, and writing skills in a real-time context. Judicial externships at all levels of the court system—except the U.S. Supreme Court—are located within three blocks of campus. “The delivery of pro bono legal services is an integral part of the practice of law and a legal education. At UC Hastings, pro bono is a way for students to distinguish themselves “my externship was invaluable. i had an opportunity to and give back to the share my thoughts not only with my judge but also with the community at the attorneys in chambers conferences. my judge introduced me same time.” to incredible attorneys who invited me to contact them when i was ready to look for a job. i also made great friendships.” —Nancy Stuart ’94, —melissa miller ’10, Judicial externship, california superior court Clinical Professor of Law and Director of Externships and Pro bono Pro Bono Programs The College’s commitment to pro bono publico, serving the public good without charge, is intimately connected to the belief that pro bono work is essential for becoming an ethical practitioner of the law. By assisting those at the margins of society and who have little or no access to legal representation, students develop the virtues associated with civic leadership and gain a better apprecia- tion of the power a law degree can have in creating a more just society. Students’ many pro bono opportunities include assisting low-income litigants in general civil legal matters; aiding asylum seekers; providing tax assistance to residents of San Francisco’s underserved Tenderloin neigh- borhood; and participating in the UC Hastings-to-Haiti Partnership, where students engage with Haitian law students to help strengthen the rule of law in the Caribbean country. www.uchastings.edu / UC hastings 17
