Yearly Competitions for Hastings Negotiation and Mediation Team

  • ABA Negotiation Competition
The competition simulates legal negotiations in which law students, acting as lawyers, negotiate a series of legal problems. The simulations consist of a common set of facts known by all participants and confidential information known only to the participants representing a particular side. All of the simulations deal with the same general topic, but the negotiation situation varies with each round and level of the competition.
  • Liberty University School of Law National Negotiations Competition
  • International Chamber of Commerce Commercial Mediation Competition
The competition consists of two parts; written and oral advocacy. During four days of preliminary rounds, competitors must apply ICC’s Amicable Dispute Resolution (ADR) Rules to solve problems devised by a special drafting committee of international mediation experts. Student teams are divided into requesting party and responding party in mock mediation sessions, where team members act out the role of counsel and client before a mediator and two judges.
  • ABA Representation in Mediation Competition
This competition, in which students role-play as advocates and clients in a mediation setting, measures how well students model appropriate preparation for and representation of a client in mediation and provides students a valuable opportunity to experience the mediation process.
  • California Environmental Law Negotiation Competition
In today's law practice, almost all civil cases settle before trial. Negotiation skills are essential. In this unique one day competition open to all California law students, two-person teams from California law schools negotiate a simulated environmental dispute, judged by environmental lawyers, judges and professional mediators.
  • International Law School Mediation Tournament
Held in Chicago, IL, this international competition is designed to help law students better understand the mediation process and its importance to the practice of law.  The primary difference between this tournament and others is that it requires students to not only participate as attorney/clients, but just as importantly as mediators.
  • Robert R. Merhige Jr. National Environmental Negotiation Competition
Drawing law students from all over the country, the two-day competition involves intense negotiations, primarily addressing current issues in environmental law.
  • The Negotiation Challenge
The contest is jointly organized by Harvard Law School and Leipzig Graduate School of Management and is one of only few international negotiation competitions in the world.   The contest allows students from leading universities all over the world to come together and compete against each other in realistic negotiation situations. Thereby, the students not only need to apply their acquired negotiation skills, but also have to work in groups and demonstrate their team spirit.
