November 2011

The U.S. State Department specifically listed UC Hastings CNDR as a priority meeting for their group of international judges, attorneys, magistrates and members of high courts visiting the San Francisco Bay Area.  On November 2nd Professors Melissa Nelken, Carol Izumi and Adjunct Professor Howard Herman will discuss the use of ADR in the US legal system and will describe academic programs that prepare the next generation of ADR professionals.

Andrew Wei-Min Lee and Vivian Ying Yu Feng of Beijing Leading Negotiation Institute will present "What Chinese Characters Say About Chinese Attitudes Toward Negotiation" Wednesday, September 14, 3:30 to 4:30 in classroom K.

Intensive Negotiation & Settlement.  This course is an introduction to the theory, process, and practice of negotiation to help students improve their skills as negotiators and develop a framework for self-learning in the future.  This course is also worth three credits. It is open to current JD students (in good academic standing) attending an ABA-accredited law school and to incoming Hastings LL.M. students.  Satisfies professional skills requirement.  July 18-29. 

Mediation Certificate Program.  This 40 hour mediation training, open to incoming Hastings LL.M. students and U.S. and international attorneys, notaries and others, will introduce participants to the theory and practice of mediation. Instruction will include presentations, but will primarily involve hands on, targeted exercises and practice in the role of the mediator.  Participants will learn by experience the skills necessary to successfully guide parties in conflict from impasse to mutually agreeable solutions.  All of the participants will receive personalized attention and feedback on mediating from experienced mediators through small group practice sessions. July 27-August 5.

Envisioning, Designing and Implementing Court ADR: A Practical and Theoretical Program.  Judges, court administrators and attorneys from foreign countries learn how to design and implement ADR systems within their own country's judicial system.  June 20-25.  Court ADR

March 2010: Adjunct Professor and Hastings alumnus John Dean speaks about his experiences in negotiation and arbitration.  John Dean's career includes negotiating on behalf of management and 13 years negotiating for the Air Line Pilots Association.
Nov 2009: 

Grande Lum lectures on Mediation Advocacy in Silicon Valley November 17.  The lecture is part of a series of Legal Perspectives presented by the Alumni Center.

Mediator Gary Friedman speaks at Hastings on mediation. Gary is one of the foremost mediators in the world: he has taught at Harvard, Stanford, and the World Intellectual Property Organization and has trained a large number of mediators in the Bay Area.  Along with his role in teaching negotiation and mediation, he is also a leader in humanizing legal education and has promoted the use of mindfulness and other contemplative practices at retreats for lawyers from across the United States.

Oct 2009:  CNDR co-sponsors the California Dispute Resolution Council's 16th Annual Dispute Resolution Policy Conference on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The Multi-option ADR Project of the San Mateo Court that Sheila Purcell directs is a 2009 Recipient of an Administrative Office of the Courts Award for Innovation in Public Service, called the "Kleps" Award.
