The University of California, Hastings College of the Law invites qualified candidates for the position of Chancellor & Dean.
UC Hastings is the first UC law school and the first law school in California. The quality, diversity, and passion of our students is what makes UC Hastings stand out. The Chancellor & Dean is the chief executive officer of UC Hastings, with the overall executive authority and accountability for the success of the College. The Chancellor & Dean reports to the Board of Directors, whose members are appointed by the California Governor for a term of 12 years. Reporting to the Chancellor & Dean are: the Academic Dean, General Counsel, and Chief Financial Officer, as well as senior associate and assistant deans, program directors and senior administrative leaders. The Chancellor & Dean provides leadership for the following areas:
External Relations – Serves as the face of UC Hastings for the state legislature; other state agencies; the City and County of San Francisco and federal government; as well as the UC Hastings neighborhood community. Maintains relations and fosters partnerships with other chancellors of the UC system and deans of law schools and other professional schools.
Institutional Advancement – Determines the priorities and goals of UC Hastings’ fundraising efforts. Drives the Building UC Hastings capital campaign. Supports the activities of the alumni groups and communicates with alumni on a regular basis. Promotes Hastings’ reputation and good will within legal education, the legal profession, and the community.
Academic Affairs – Oversees the work of the Academic Dean to maintain the excellence and integrity of the academic program and cultivate collegial and constructive relations with and among faculty.
Administration and Planning – Oversees the effective management of all UC Hastings’ operations. Provides leadership in long range and strategic planning that addresses the evolving academic and financial environment of legal education in the context of UC Hastings’ mission.
Student Recruitment, Enrollment Management and Financial Aid – Ensures the planning and execution of student recruitment efforts that attract a highly qualified and diverse student body to meet enrollment goals. Oversees the effective use of institutional, private, state, and federal financial aid programs to adequately and responsibly meet student needs.
Financial Management – Ensures that financial resources are adequate and prudently managed through the development of an effective operating budget and long-term investment strategy.
UC Hastings welcomes candidates from a variety of backgrounds, including those with experience in legal education administration and other higher education administration, and candidates with senior management experience outside of academia, including the judiciary, government service, and the legal profession.
The Dean sets the overall tone for the school. Candidates will be expected to succeed in the following areas:
Strategic Planning – Demonstrate visionary leadership committed to the strategic and dynamic development of UC Hastings as part of a re-envisioning of higher education for the next century, partnering with other institutions using shared academic and administrative platforms;
Management and Problem Solving – Manage a complex enterprise. Be an adroit problem-solver and a resolute decision-maker. Combine management experience with effective people skills. Demonstrate a commitment to the continuation of a collegial model of governance.
Academic Excellence – Provide a global vision and be an advocate for continued growth and excellence in the academic program. Respect and appreciate the rigors and demands of faculty and staff roles.
Development – Be a committed fund-raiser with the interpersonal and communication skills to interact persuasively with the philanthropic community. Will solicit and steward private support from alumni, boards, friends; foundations, law firms and corporations.
Change Management – Promote and manage change in response to evolving fiscal environments and emerging challenges;
Community and Diversity – Create a strong sense of community among faculty, staff, students and alumni. Continue and reinforce UC Hastings' reputation for attracting a diverse population. Demonstrate commitment to promoting diversity within an organization (such as a student body, faculty and administrative team, a corporation or law firm environment); and
Communication – Be an excellent communicator, able to speak and write effectively to a wide range of constituencies.
