I'm writing to express appreciation. Yesterday's Commencement was perfect. Everything functioned exactly as it should, even the amusing moment when our 92 year-old honorary degree recipient began to exit the stage without having received his scroll. It was all the more remarkable for having been the very first of these days to have been led by Rupa Bhandari, our Director of Student Services. Thanks to tremendous advance preparation, she carried the event off with aplomb, high competence, and, perhaps most importantly, great calm. She has earned universal praise.
Yet Rupa was only one of many. The participation of dozens was vital, with smiling faces on everyone who brought their skills sets to bear on a complex operation before an audience of thousands. Moments such as this make us a community. The full list of volunteers has already been provided -- please take a moment to acknowledge your colleagues, and, I hope, take away the inspiration to join us next year.
After the ceremony, I learned a lesson that is important to be reminded of. A few guests said to me I had given a terrific speech. Of course, while we did have several wonderful speeches, I gave no speech. Brevity impresses.
And on that note, I close by saying thank you once again to everyone!
Sincerely,
