Upon graduation Professor Gruen went to work for a prominent personal injury law firm in San Francisco and ultimately became a named partner at Cartwright, Bokelman, Borowsky, Moore, Harris, Alexander and Gruen.  She continued her legal career at Nevin Gruen where she developed an interest and specialty in construction and real estate litigation.  She was then asked to join Morgan Miller  Blair in Walnut Creek to further develop her career and enjoyed her partnership there until she was recruited to open up a Northern California office for the Southern California developer firm of Newmeyer & Dillion, LLP.
