Jonathan Soglin

Adjunct Professor Jonathan D. Soglin graduated from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 1984.  He received his J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1988.  After a clerkship with a federal magistrate in the Northern District of California and a 2-1/2 year stint as a staff attorney at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Professor Soglin opened his own criminal appellate law practice in 1993.  He served on state and federal appointed counsel appellate panels throughout California and represented and advised federal defendants seeking post-conviction relief in federal district courts throughout the country.

After five years of solo practice --- during which he briefed and argued cases in the United States Supreme Court and the California Supreme Court, as well as the lower state and federal appellate courts --- Professor Soglin joined the First District Appellate Project (FDAP) in San Francisco as a staff attorney.  At FDAP, Professor Soglin continues to provide representation to criminal defendants on appeal and in habeas proceedings in state and federal court.  He has expanded his practice to include representation of indigent parents in child dependency appeals.  He has lectured on research techniques, as well as substantive and procedural aspects of criminal and dependency law.
