Christian E. Mammen, Acting Assistant Dean of International and Graduate Programs


Following law school, he earned a doctorate in jurisprudence from Oxford University in England. His scholarly dissertation was published in 2002 entitled Using Legislative History in American Statutory Interpretation. In 1995-1996, Dr. Mammen served as a law clerk to the Hon. Robert R. Beezer on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.  

For the past 13 years, Dr. Mammen has practiced patent and related intellectual property litigation and appeals in San Francisco and Silicon Valley.  He is experienced in litigating intellectual property rights in the telecommunications, Internet and biotechnology fields.  At Hastings, he has taught Property, Civil Procedure, Evidence, and E-Discovery.  He has also taught Pretrial Civil Litigation at U.C. Berkeley’s Boalt Hall.  He has also written and lectured in patent law.  His research interests include intellectual property law and legal interpretation.

From 1997-2005, he practiced intellectual property and appellate litigation in the San Francisco office of Heller Ehrman.  Dr. Mammen joined the Silicon Valley IP litigation boutique of Day Casebeer Madrid & Batchelder in 2005, and was a partner there from 2007-2008.  He has litigated a number of IP cases in a wide range of technologies, including Internet search, high temperature superconductivity, mobile telecommunications, digital video and audio, and biotechnology.

Dr. Mammen is a member of the American Bar Association, and was co-chair of the Patent Litigation Subcommittee of the ABA’s Section of Litigation from 2003-2006. He also served as the IP Litigation chair for the San Francisco Bar Association’s Barrister’s Club in 2002-2003. In 1997, he was recognized by The American Lawyer for his pro bono work on behalf of low-income tenants in San Francisco, and he served on the Board of Directors of Legal Assistance to the Elderly from 1999 to 2005.
