James Sloan, Visiting Professor
Professor James Sloan received his LL.B. degree (Dean's Honour Roll) from the University of Windsor, School of Law in 1988. He received his LL.M. degree (Merit) in International Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1994 and his PhD from the University of Glasgow, School of Law in 2008.
Upon graduation from law school, Dr. Sloan was a Clerk to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario. He subsequently practiced as a litigation associate at a large corporate law firm in Toronto. After obtaining his LL.M. degree, he practiced international law in a number of capacities, including as a Law Clerk to the first President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the Legal Advisor to the International Service for Human Rights and a Political Advisor to the United Nations Department of Political Affairs. Before moving to Glasgow, Dr. Sloan worked in London, Geneva, The Hague, New York, and Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.
Dr. Sloan joined the University of Glasgow, School of Law in 2000 and has taught courses in, among other things, United Nations Law, International Criminal Law and International Human Rights Law. His research areas center on United Nations peacekeeping, the guarantee of fair trial rights in international criminal prosecutions and international humanitarian law. His book, The Militarisation of UN Peacekeeping in the 21st Century will be available from Hart in 2011.
