            William W Schwarzer, Emeritus Professor of Law

            Judge Schwarzer is a Senior United States District Judge for the Northern District of California, having been appointed in 1976. Previously he was a partner in the San Francisco law firm of McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen. From 1990 until 1995, he served as Director of the Federal Judicial Center in Washington.

            Judge Schwarzer received his A.B. and LL.B. degrees cum laude from the University of Southern California and Harvard Law School, respectively. He was a Teaching Fellow at Harvard Law School from 1951-52. He has been a frequent lecturer and panel member at judicial training and Continuing Legal Education programs, a member of the faculty at the Salzburg Seminar, a moderator at the Aspen Institute's Justice and Society Seminar, and an adjunct professor at the Georgetown Law Center.

            He has been the chairman of the U.S. Judicial Conference Committee on Federal-State Jurisdiction and a member of the American Law Institute and its Advisory Committee on Complex Litigation. He is a Judicial Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a recipient of its Samuel E. Gates Litigation Award. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and member on the advisory board of the American Bar Association's Central and East European Law Initiative.

            Judge Schwarzer is the author of Managing Antitrust and Other Complex Litigation and a co-author of Civil Discovery and Mandatory Disclosure, and the Rutter Group's Federal Practice Guide. He is also the author of numerous articles on a variety of subjects relating to the federal courts and the administration of justice.
