Mai Linh Spencer spent five years as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, prosecuting federal criminal civil rights violations. After moving to the Bay Area, she represented capital and non-capital defendants on direct appeal as a Deputy State Public Defender. She first came to UC Hastings in 2009 as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in the Civil Justice Clinic, where she taught the Individual Representation Clinic. She left in 2012 and spent a year teaching Evidence as a Lecturer at Berkeley Law School, acting as general counsel for her partner’s startup, and consulting for the National Council on Crime and Delinquency. Linh returns to Hastings as Academic Director of Lawyers for America and also teaches and supervises students in the Legal Externship program.
