MS Campus Agreement Software FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions Concerning Free Microsoft Software

I have a Mac - am I eligible for the "upgrade" version of Windows that is available?

Yes.  This is classified as a "competitive upgrade."

Is the software license we receive perpetual, or does it expire after a period of time?

For students, the license is perpetual.  For faculty and staff, the license expires when you leave Hastings.

Do I have the right to install Office on two computers?

No.  Our license specifies that each person can install the program on just one computer.  The same applies for Windows.  If you later get another computer that you would like to install your software on, you will first need to uninstall the software from the computer it was initially installed on, in order to install it on your new computer.

Is there a version of OneNote for Macs?

No.  You can get your copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and Office 2010 from e-Academy for free (or $4.95 with 24 month extended download guarantee) and set them up on your Mac to get OneNote.  Microsoft Word in Office 2011 for Mac has a feature called "Notebook View" which does provide much of the same functionality as OneNote, so if your Mac computer does not have the hardware or resources to run Windows in one of the below mentioned ways, give it a try and see if it is suitable for your note taking needs.

Do you recommend Parallels or Boot Camp as a path to install Windows and Office on Macs?

Boot Camp is free and included with OSX 10.5 and above. Parallels can be purchased for $39.99 (half the retail price) from the e-Academy store.  Parallels runs Windows within the Mac operating system, so you can run Windows programs, such as Microsoft OneNote in a window while maintaining your Mac desktop.  With Boot Camp you have to close one operating system and boot into the other.  On the other hand, the Parallels/Mac setup uses up battery power at a faster rate, and requires a Mac that is less than 2 years old with 4 GB of RAM to run Windows 7 smoothly.  It will run with less, but we do not recommend it.  Since it does split some resources that are available to each operating system, you will notice some performance degradation while running Parallels.  If you want to discuss the issues further, please make an appointment to come in and talk to us by writing to helpdesk@uchastings.edu

How do I get my activation codes for the software I downloaded?

On the e-Academy store's home page (follow links here), at the very top, you will see a link to "Your Account"  - follow that link and you will be able to access the activation code (aka Product Key) you need for each download that requires activation.  You will also be able to re-download the software in case you need to reinstall it.

What if I already have a trial version of Microsoft Office installed on my computer?

You must uninstall any trial version of Microsoft Office that is already installed on your computer before you can install the full version from e-Academy.  Also, if you want to install the 64-bit version of Office 2010 (provided of course that you have the 64 bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7 running on your computer), you will need to completely uninstall ALL prior versions of Office before installing Office 2010 64-bit.

I graduated - can I still get access to my activation code at e-Academy?

Yes.  You no longer have access to e-Academy through our site, but you can contact support@e-academy.com  - they will retrieve your activation code for you.
