Email Migration Update
Detailed instructions for setting up Macs and smartphones, etc. on the new email system
Mar 28, 2012. We have completed the migration of all student, staff and faculty email accounts to the new Exchange 2010 servers. There are a few "punch list" items left which we anticipate will be completed in the next two weeks. The migration went very smoothly, although there were several issues that we had not anticipated. The number of "help desk" calls has dropped, but we are still ready to deal with problems that anyone is experiencing.
Mar 13, 2012 [8:00am] Nearly all email accounts have migrated. There are several dozen organization accounts still left to do. We anticipate that this will happen by tomorrow, March 14.
Mar 5, 2012 [9:00am] The first large batch of staff and faculty mailboxes (500 accounts) successfully migrated over the weekend. An email was sent today to all those account holders. If you are experiencing any issues with email, please contact the IT Help Desk group at 581-8802 or helpdesk@uchastings.edu.
Mar 2, 2012 [10:30am] We successfully migrated the second group of staff accounts last night. We will be running another migration batch during the day (today, Friday 3/2/12). Starting tonight we will complete the migration of all UC Hastings staff accounts to the new Exchange 2010 server.
Mar 1, 2012 [3:00pm] We migrated the first group of staff accounts from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 today. There were a few rough spots in the transition but we now have all these first test accounts working on Outlook, OWA, iPhone/iPad, Android. We will proceed with the first batch of staff migrations tonight. There is still a problem with off-campus users who have Outlook (full client) on their computers. For those users, please use OWA (click the Email link at top of any Hastings web page) to access your email until we have this issue resolved. By the way, the new OWA (Outlook Web APP) is fantastic. Something for everyone to look forward to.
Mar 1, 2012 [10:30am] Some iPhone users have reported that the solution (below) does not work. Simply typing "uchastings" (without the quotes) into the Domain field in Settings didn't fix the problem. In the two cases we have seen, the solution was to delete the Hastings account under the iPhone's Mail settings, and then to re-create the account.
Mar 1, 2012. [7:30am] Several unexpected issues developed after we brought the new Exchange server online yesterday. If you are an iPhone/iPad user and getting invalid password error messages, go into Settings, Mail/Contacts/Calendars and edit the Hastings email settings. For the "Domain" field, type: uchastings then save and your email should work OK. For Outlook (full client) and Entourage users, we are researching the connection problems. Outlook Web Access is working, so Outlook (client) users can access their email at: https://owa.uchastings.edu/exchange.
Feb 29, 2012. We have begun to install the latest version of Microsoft Exchange Email 2010 for all staff, students and faculty. Beginning on Wed., Feb. 29 and continuing for the next ten days, we will be making changes to the network and migrating individual mailboxes to the new system. Today, we will be switching certain equipment that will be essential in this process. We do not anticipate any prolonged service interruptions. However, it is possible that some users who have Outlook or other email clients configured incorrectly may experience disruptions. If this happens to you, please contact the IT HelpDesk Group to seek assistance. We are located in room 379 in the 200 McAllister building. Feel free to drop by from 8:30am to 4:30pm. You can also call 581-8802 (or ext. 8802 on campus) to leave a voice message or send an email to: helpdesk@uchastings.edu. We will send an email to individual account holders the day before we plan to migrate their mailboxes. On the actual day this takes place, you will not have access to email for about an hour while the process of migration takes place.

Software Downloads
Students, faculty, and staff can install the following programs under conditions of the Microsoft and McAfee site licenses for UC Hastings. You will need your Hastings email login and password to get started. All software downloads for Microsoft Office and Windows 7 are free for students but only allow you to download the installation files for 30 days after checkout. For an additional fee of only $4.95, you will be able to download the installation files again anytime for 2 years, should you need to re-install it for some reason. If you do not choose this option, we recommend you keep the installation files and product key somewhere safe (such as burned to a DVD) in case you ever need to re-install the software. For Staff/Faculty the off-site e-Academy vendor charges $9.75 for each product you wish to download and install onto your computer. You can download one (1) copy of each product. We have a FAQ regarding Microsoft software and information on McAfee Antivirus for Windows and Macs. If you have any problems, questions, etc. contact the HelpDesk. Choose the software you wish to download:
- Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus for PCs, 64-bit and 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, upgrade for Windows, 64-bit and 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, competitive upgrade for Macs
- Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, 64-bit and 32-bit
- McAfee Antivirus for both Windows and Macs
Copyright Infringement, Peer-to-Peer File Sharing and the Hastings Network Bandwidth
We have received complaints from the Recording Industry Association of America about peer-to-peer file sharing of copyrighted music and video files by users on the Hastings network. Students need to understand that any such sharing of copyrighted materials is illegal and is subject not only to civil and criminal penalties but also to disciplinary action under the Hastings Acceptable Use Policy. Please refrain from any such activity on the Hastings network. It will not only jeopardize your future and career, but also the continued use of the network by your fellow students.
We have installed packet/traffic shaping technology to block as much peer-to-peer traffic as possible. Using this blocking technology has enabled us to remove individual bandwidth limits and has substantially improved the Internet experience for all; nevertheless students are expected to use only a reasonable proportion of the Internet bandwidth or the bandwidth on any wireless access point.
