WebAdvisor Frequently Asked Questions

What is WebAdvisor?

WebAdvisor is an online student and applicant information system. Students can view their grades and class schedules, view the master course schedule, and apply for graduation through the WebAdvisor page. This information comes from our administrative database which contains student and applicant records. Access to WebAdvisor is restricted to Hastings students, faculty, and staff through individual passwords.

Which browsers can I use with WebAdvisor?

WebAdvisor is currently supported on the following browsers:

* Internet Explorer 8 on Windows
* Firefox 3.0+ on Mac, Windows, Linux
* Safari 4 on Mac

WebAdvisor has been accessed from other platforms, such as X Window, but it has not been rigorously tested on these platforms and the results may be problematical. Currently there are known issues (date field lock-up) with Safari 5 and Google Chrome.

WebAdvisor puts a session cookie on your desktop when you log into the system. When you close your browser, the cookie is erased.

I am getting slow response to my WebAdvisor queries. What is the problem?

There are a number of conditions that might affect your response time in WebAdvisor. Often an increase in the response time is related to traffic over the communication lines. Depending upon your location, WebAdvisor uses the Hastings Intranet, the Internet or both. The number of users on any portion of those systems will often slow the response time for everyone. Downloading large files via our network will drastically increase response time for all other users on the system. High levels of WebAdvisor use also affect your response time. This is caused not only by increased user traffic, but also by the additional processing required of our host machine to respond to WebAdvisor queries. An example of a high-use time period would be during the first weeks after grades are released or when we start to offer Web registration. You may also experience slower performance during peak usage periods for your Internet Service Provider (ISP). You should notify your IT staff if you continue to experience poor performance during non-peak usage periods.

What is my User Name?

Your "user name" is your Hastings email account name (without the "@uchastings.edu" part). For example, my email address is: "noblee@uchastings.edu". My "User Name" then is just: noblee.

What is my Password?

Your WebAdvisor password is the same as used with email. For password maintenance, use the Outlook Web Access (OWA) page at http://www.uchastings.edu/check-email.html

If you are a new user, your initial email password will not work with WebAdvisor. You must change your initial passord via Outlook Web Access before you can use WebAdvisor.

What if you get "invalid user name" or "invalid password"?

Your WebAdvisor ID and password are the same as used with email. For password maintenance, use the Outlook Web Access (OWA) page.

I forgot my password, what do I do?

Your WebAdvisor ID and password are the same as used with email. For password maintenance, use the Outlook Web Access (OWA) page.

What are the "repeat boxes" on the transcript page?

On the Grades/Transcript page, the "Repeat" column indicates (with a check mark) if you have repeated that class.

I get the message: "java.net.Socket Exception = connect (code=10061)". What is that?

The server is down for maintenance. Try back later.

How does online registration work? How do I register?

See the Records Office how to use web registration page.

I get the message: "Forced exit from screen without explanation. Contact System Administrator". What is that?

The message usually shows when you are not logged in to WebAdvisor or you are timed out. Try to log back into WebAdvisor.

I get the message: "Guests cannot execute a transaction". What do I do?

The message usually shows when your current web session is timed out. Please log in again to WebAdvisor.
