Search For Secondary Sources

Click on the “Search” tab.  Click on the “Legal” tab underneath “Search."

Initial search

Scroll down until you see “Secondary Legal” in the right column.  Underneath “Secondary Legal," find the blue hyperlinked “Jurisprudences, ALR & Encyclopedias” and click on it.

Narrow search

Once you are on the secondary source page, click on the text of a specific database to search within it.  To combine databases to create a combined search, you can check the boxes to the left of the text and then click the red button “Combine Sources” on the bottom right of the page.  For American Law Reports, click on the text “American Law Reports (ALR)."  For Witkin, click on the text “Witkin Treatises.”

  • “Witkin Treatises” will allow you to search Witkin on Evidence, Procedure, Criminal law, and Witkin Summary of the Law all at once.
  • This is what you will want to do unless you are sure that the answer to your question lies in one of the individual treatises.  In that case, you can click on the text for the specific Witkin Treatise (Ex. Witkin California Evidence, Witkin California Procedure, etc,).

For California Jurisprudence (CalJur), click on the text “California Jurisprudence 3d.”

Other sources

Now you are ready to run a search.  In Witkin and CalJur, you will see the search box and the table of contents underneath.  You can type in your search terms in the box and click “Search,” or you can click on “Advanced” to get to the advanced search page.
