How To Search For Federal Cases


Once you have logged in and navigated to the westlaw research page, you have two options to search federal cases.

Option 1: Go to the “Cases” menu in the center of the screen and click the “All Federal” link.

    You are now in the Federal Cases database.  Type in your search terms using either the "natural language" or "terms and connectors" option, then click “search Westlaw.”  For more information about formulating successful searches, click here.

    If you know what circuit you are looking for, you can access it directly from the “law school” tab.  To find cases from the Ninth Circuit, go to the “Search for a Database” menu on the left-hand side of the screen and type in “CTA9.”  Click “go.”  (Note: For any other circuit, replace the “9” with the number of the circuit you are looking for.)

    Option 2: Go to the “Search for a Database” menu on the left-hand side of the screen and type in “allfeds.”  Click “go."
