The Usual Suspects Criminal Justice Film Club Presents Murder on a Sunday Morning
Start: 9/14/2009 from 7:00 PM to
10:00 PM
Location: 198 McAllister, Room A
Hastings Usual Suspects, a criminal justice film club, invites you to enjoy the Oscar-winning documentary, Murder on a Sunday Morning, over light refreshments.
The San Francisco Chronicle describes the film as “In May 2000, a 65-year-old woman was shot to death outside a Jacksonville, Florida, motel room. A few hours later, sheriff's deputies picked up 15-year-old Brenton Butler. He'd aroused suspicion, apparently, because he was walking while black. No gun or other physical evidence was found to link him to the crime. But detectives extracted a confession after the kid was questioned, without a lawyer, by the hands-on ex-football lineman who was the detective team's enforcer. The details of the investigation and subsequent trial, as rendered in the documentary Murder on a Sunday Morning will enrage you. The film indicts not only a group of officers who were as lazy as they were unjust but also a system that never should have allowed the case to go to trial."
