Judge Goldstone Speaks on the Evolution of International Criminal Justice

Start:  2/15/2011 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Location:  200 McAllister, Alumni Reception Center

Please join us for a conversation style interview with Judge Richard Goldstone regarding The Evolution of International Criminal Justice.

Judge Goldstone will be interviewed by UC Hastings Visiting Professor James Sloan.

Judge Goldstone is world-renowned for his generous service to national law-primarily in his home country of South Africa-and to international law, in particular international criminal law and international humanitarian law.

Some of the highlights of his background include his appointment by the South African government to serve on the Transvaal Supreme Court from 1980 to 1989 and the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa from 1990 to 1994. He was one of several judges who issued key rulings that undermined apartheid from within the system by tempering the worst effects of the country's racial laws. As a result, he was credited with playing an indispensable role in the transition and became a household name in South Africa, attracting widespread international support and interest.

In his international work, through his work with the United Nations, Judge Goldstone has prosecuted a number of key war suspects and investigated international human rights and humanitarian law violations related to the Gaza War.

Dr. Sloan joined the University of Glasgow, School of Law in 2000. His research areas center on United Nations peacekeeping, the guarantee of fair trial rights in international criminal prosecutions and international humanitarian law.

Beverages will be served.
