Discussion/Workshop: Prisoner Led Community Organizing & Prison Conditions
Start: 3/16/2011 from 3:30 PM to
4:30 PM
Location: 198 McAllister, Room A
In conjunction with Hastings Prisoner Outreach, legal workers provide updates on current prisoner organizing and strikes in Georgia and Ohio.
Speakers:
- Jerry Elster, survivor of 27 years in San Quentin prison and a powerful community advocate through All Of Us Or None and Legal Services for Prisoners With Children, will be discussing the prison labor strikes in Georgia, their repercussions today, and the legal efforts underway to defend those being retaliated against as organizers.
- Kiilu Nyasha, host of the TV show "Freedom Is a Constant Struggle" will discuss the Georgia strikes within the historical context of prison organizing such as the Attica rebellion and her work supporting political prisoners.
- Hans Bennett, founder of "Journalists For Mumia Abu-Jamal," will discuss the impact of prolonged isolation and supermax detention facilities on human beings, and their use as a form of retaliation against people organizing in prison.
All will discuss ways that people outside prisons can support people organizing for social change inside prisons.
In addition, Caitlin Kelly Henry of the Hastings National Lawyers Guild and Nayeli Maxson of Hastings Prisoner Outreach will be leading group activities.
The event is free and open to the public; an NLG member will be at the front door from 3:00-3:30 to lead visitors to the room. There will be free, vegetarian & vegan, Indian and Italian pizza for attendees. No RSVP is required.
