Hastings Business Law Journal Annual Symposium: Citizens United v. FEC: One Year Later
Start: 4/15/2011 from 8:30 AM to
3:15 PM
Location: 200 McAllister, Alumni Reception Center
The Hastings Business Law Journal (HBLJ) Annual Symposium will focus on Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission one year after the decision. Following a keynote speech by Professor Frederick W. Lambert, the symposium will include two panels of speakers and the 2008 politicized documentary, Hillary: The Movie.
The case represented a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court holding that corporate funding of independent political broadcasts in candidate elections cannot be limited—because of the First Amendment. Hillary: The Movie was blocked from airing just before the Democratic primaries in 2008 and was seen as the cause of the controversy.
Professors Calvin R. Massey, Ashutosh Bhagwat, and David L. Faigman will serve as panelists in a discussion of whether or not Citizens United is constitutional. Professor John D. Leshy will moderate this first panel. In the second panel, Jesse Mainardi ‘01 , David Yosifon, Michael Lighty will discuss the real-world implications of Citizens United, and Professor Osagie K. Obasogie will moderate.
