Joan C. Williams at the Commonwealth Club
Start: 6/3/2011 from 12:00 PM to
1:00 PM
Location: The Commonwealth Club, 595 Market Street
Joan C. Williams, Distinguished Professor of Law and Founder/Director of the Center for WorkLife Law at UC Hastings, will speak on June 3rd at the Commonwealth Club of California. The event, entitled “Why Are Democrats Embattled, and How Can They Win Again?” will be presented in conversation with Mary Cranston, Firm Senior Partner and Immediate Past Chair, Pillsbury.
Called “something of a rock star” by The New York Times, Williams contends that Republicans win working-class votes by adeptly tapping class resentments. With vivid descriptions of the class structure of coffee, how child-rearing differs by class, and how the “culture wars” reflect class conflict, Williams makes the case that Democrats can bridge the “class culture gap” and attain a new Democratic majority.
Cost: $20 standard, Commonwealth Club members free, $7 students (with valid ID)
