UCSF / UC Hastings Consortium Summer Intern Research Update

Start:  7/19/2011 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Location:  198 McAllister, Room B

2011 UCSF / UC Hastings Consortium Summer Interns Mallory Calberg, Jackie Dumais, Liz McCaman, and Yaelle Shaham will be presenting their research on topics such as state abortion restrictions, mental incompetence and consent for medical procedures, elder financial abuse, and human subjects research.

Presentations & About the Interns

Mallory Carlberg will be speaking on abortion legislation nationwide, focusing specifically on its impact on access in Oklahoma.  Mallory worked with the Consortium as a research assistant for Jennifer Dunn on projects regarding medical malpractice fears and rising cesarean section rates in the U.S. She is currently a rising 2L at the University of Oklahoma College of Law where she is an officer for United Students, an LGBT advocacy group, and is co-founding a Law Students for Reproductive Justice chapter.

Jackie Dumais will present a working draft of the Consortium’s Practical Guide for UC Hastings Researchers.  The Guide is intended to provide information for Hastings Researchers submitting studies for IRB approval.  It will provide a brief overview of the laws pertaining to the protection of human research subjects as well as instructions for compliance with those laws.  Once complete, the Guide will be available on the Consortium website. As an intern to Jennifer Dunn, Jackie assisted with the composition of web resources regarding health reform and federal regulation of research involving human subjects.  She is a second year J.D. candidate at UC Hastings, where she plans to concentrate her studies in health law and intellectual property.  Prior to attending law school, Jackie obtained a B.A. in Molecular Biology from UC Berkeley and went on to work in genetic research and pharmaceutical development.  She hopes to continue working on issues related to health care and research in the San Francisco Bay Area, which she is proud to call her home.

Liz McCaman will be discussing mental incompetence and its bar to consent for medical procedures.  Incompetent women in California face huge obstacles in exercising their reproductive rights, specifically abortion.  Liz will explore the statutory, case law, and public policy reasons behind such obstacles and whether or not they are justified. Liz's summer projects included researching the legal, ethical, and medical issues surrounding treatment of extremely premature neonates.  She conducted research on consent to abortion for mentally incompetent women for the Medical-Legal Handbook on Abortion Care in California.  Liz is currently a rising 2L at UC Hastings College of the Law, and spends her free time as a volunteer at the Women's Option Center in San Francisco General Hospital.  She graduated magna cum laude from Loyola Marymount University with a B.A. in Political Science in 2010.

Yaelle Shaham-Smart will be speaking about the literature review she has helped conduct as part of the EFAC (Elder Financial Abuse Collaboration) to identify barriers to, and models for, addressing elder financial abuse, focusing primarily on the legal response. Yaelle is a rising 3L at Hastings pursuing a concentration in Law and Health Sciences.  She graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in Society and Environment, with a special emphasis in Environmental Justice and Development.  Before attending law school, Yaelle worked for the Pesticide Action Network of North America (PANNA) and as an office manager for a private medical practice.  She is currently working with Sarah Hooper on the San Francisco Elder Financial Abuse Collaboration.
