Conference on Work-Life Fit for Hourly Workers: Lessons for Employers & Unions
Start: 7/18/2011 from 8:30 AM to
12:30 PM
Location: 200 McAllister, Alumni Reception Center
Discussion of new research and best practices for improving schedule effectiveness and work-life fit in hourly jobs, including successful models from both employer policies and union contracts. Most research on work-life fit has focused on workplace flexibility for professionals. Yet common scheduling practices for hourly workers can be even more costly, with unstable and rigid schedules leading to rampant absenteeism and turnover. Learn how your workplace can enhance work-life fit for its hourly workers--and improve its bottom line.
The half-day conference will feature:
- Keynote by Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), a leader on Capitol Hill on work-life issues.
- Pathbreaking research by Distinguished Professor Joan C. Williams, founding director of the Center for WorkLife Law.
- A panel of union experts highlighting successful contract provisions to improve work-life fit for their members.
- A panel of employer experts highlighting successful policies they have implemented to improve schedule effectiveness and reduce costs.
Sponsored by:
- The Center for WorkLife Law, UC Hastings College of the Law
- The Labor Project for Working Families
- The California Commission on the Status of Women
- The U.S. Department of Labor Women's Bureau, Region IX
