Prof. Karen Musalo Named Among the Top 100 Lawyers in California

Professor Karen Musalo named one of the top 100 lawyers in California by the Daily Journal.

"Musalo is an internationally recognized expert on the plight of women asylum-seekers fleeing gender-related persecution.  In a rare move, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals asked Musalo and the center to file an amicus brief in a key case involving three women from the Guinea who were victims of genital mutilation and faced deportation.  In June 2008, a three-judge panel, which included now-U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, tossed the deportation order, ruling the women were eligible for protection.  Musalo also won a quiet victory in April when the Department of Homeland Security opened the door to claims of battered women.  In that instance, government lawyers filed a brief in a case involving Musalo’s client that said under some circumstances battered immigrant women could be considered part of a persecuted social group and therefore considered refugees."
