All Tang Teams Advance to Nationals

Hastings 2L students Susan Tran and Matt Tabo (pictured at the right) placed first in the Thomas Tang/NAPABA International Moot Court Competition regional, held in San Francisco on October 22-23, 2010 at Hastings and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The win, coupled with their award for Second Place Brief, guarantees them a spot at the National Competition on November 19-20 in Los Angeles.
Additionally, the other two Hastings Tang teams (pictured below) had impressive outings at the regional: Ivy Paek and Judy Yang, along with Alice Wang and Kelly Matayoshi earned spots at the National Competition with strong semi-final performances. Ms. Yang and Ms. Paek took away the award for Best Brief, and Ms. Yang was awarded Best Oralist.

The Thomas Tang National Moot Court Competition is administered by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. The Competition honors the late Judge Thomas Tang, a champion of individual rights and an advocate for the advancement of minority attorneys. The Competition is open to all students but is especially designed to reach out to APA law students and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their writing and oral advocacy skills, awarding scholarships totaling $10,000. UC Hastings Chancellor and Dean Frank H. Wu was the author of this fall's competition problem, which involved the constitutionality of an alien registration statute.
The Hastings Moot Court Department extends special thanks to student coaches Darren Chan, Carmen Lo, and James de los Reyes. The program also thanks Tang alumni coaches Teri Nguyen, Kathy Dong, Cary Chen, Kyong Kim and Euborn Chiu for their ongoing support of the Moot Court program.
