UC Hastings Receives Cy Pres Award of More Than $363,000 for Abascal Fellowship

At the request of Bruce L. Simon '80 of Pearson, Simon, Warshaw & Penny, LLP and Reed R. Kathrein of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro, LLP, UC Hastings College of the Law was a recipient of a cy pres award in In re Apple iPod Nano Cases. As a result, the College received funds totaling over $363,000 in support for the Ralph S. Abascal Fellowship to continue UC Hastings' commitment to providing access and public service to underserved communities.
Established shortly after Abascal's death in 1997, the fellowship was created in honor of Ralph Santiago Abascal '68 in recognition of his lifetime advocacy on behalf of the poor and underserved communities. The fellowship is supported by an endowment and provides an award to a recent UC Hastings graduate who is working on a project that includes legal advocacy, community education and policy change on behalf of underserved communities. Currently, this award is provided every other year. These additional cy pres funds will enable the College to offer the award on an annual basis.
