Prof. Ethan J. Leib Co-Writes Opinion on Why in California Two Budgets Proposals are Better than One

In an Open Forum article published in the San Francisco Chronicle and SFGate.com, UC Hastings Professor Ethan J. Leib joins forces with UC Davis Professor Chris Elmendorf to report on California's "budget morass." Their thought is that California needs to move forward in a way that honors both Governor Jerry Brown's welcome efforts as well as the American tradition of two-party politics. They purport that the budget problem is not just a budget problem, it's a democracy problem. Leib and Elmendorf recommend that Gov. Jerry Brown allow Republicans to submit a budget.

Feb. 11, 2011 - Jerry Brown got it right when he announced that the path out of California's budget morass cannot be chosen without checking with the people. But for check-in to be meaningful, the people need to see alternatives. Republicans must step up to the plate and present a budget of their own. Give the people two budgets - one Democratic, one Republican - and let the sounder one prevail.
