UC Hastings Moot Court Teams Deliver Strong Performances

UC Hastings Moot Court teams earned major awards in four recent competitions, affirming their reputation as one of the most successful and well-respected Moot Court programs in the country. Lawschooladvocacy.com now lists UC Hastings as #2 in their running tally of Appellate Advocacy Rankings for the 2010 season. These competitions provide excellent experience in legal research, analysis, writing, and oral advocacy, good contacts in the legal community, resume value, and a great sense of accomplishment, teamwork and school spirit.
2011 Asylum & Refugee Law National Moot Court Competition

The UC Hastings Moot Court team took home the Championship title at the Fourth Annual Asylum & Refugee Law National Moot Court Competition, hosted by U.C. Davis at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California in Sacramento. Hastings 2L students Stephanie Kang and Julia Heming gave outstanding performances and took home the gold, winning the Championship round of the competition. Julia Heming also received the Second Best Oral Advocate award.
The Asylum & Refugee Law Moot Court Competition is the only competition in the nation devoted exclusively to the topic of asylum and refugee law. It is also the only immigration law moot court competition on the West Coast.

16th Annual Whittier National Juvenile Law Moot Court Competition
February 4-5, 2011
Meanwhile, for the first time in UC Hastings history, the Hastings Moot Court team emerged as Champions of the Whittier National Juvenile Law Moot Court Competition, hosted by Whittier Law School's Moot Court Honors Board and the Center for Children's Rights in Costa Mesa, California.
UC Hastings sent two teams to the Whittier Competition and together they claimed all of the top awards in the competition. Hastings 2L students Madihha Ahussain and Jenna Morton won the Championship round of the entire competition. Ahussain also won the Best Oral Advocate award and Morton received the Second Best Oral Advocate award. The team rounded out their victories with the Second Best Brief award. The second team, comprised of Hastings 2L students Ruth Israely and Wesley Sheffield, won the coveted Best Brief Award and proudly finished as semi-finalists in the overall competition.
The Whittier National Juvenile Law Moot Court Competition is the only annual national moot court competition that focuses on juvenile law issues. The competition has addressed a wide range of issues that affect juveniles and attracts competitors from prestigious law schools across the nation.
The UC Hastings team extends their special thanks to student coaches Julia Brighton '11 and Ivy Paek ‘12 and Alumni Coaches Amber Chrystal and Chad Herrington for their tireless energy and dedication towards making these teams a success.
Annual Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition

The UC Hastings Moot Court team returned victorious from the 15th Annual Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition, held at University of Denver College of Law. 2L students Peter Franklin, Lance Cidre and Spencer Potter won first place at the North America Pacific Regional Round Championship, as well as the Best Brief award and Best Oralist award for the advocacy of Peter B. Franklin ‘12. As a result, the success earns UC Hastings the opportunity to compete at the International Finals in March.
The UC Hastings team extends their special thanks to student coach, Tiffany Gates ‘11, who is a member of last year's award-winning Stetson team, and alumni coach Sara Aminzadeh for their ongoing support of the Moot Court program.
2011 Andrews Kurth Moot Court National Championship
January 26-29, 2011
UC Hastings 2L students Tom Fay, Ryan Rezaei and Erica Connolly advanced to the semi-final oral argument rounds at the 2011 Andrews Kurth Moot Court National Championship invitational, hosted by the University of Houston Law Center. The competition is designed to recognize "the best of the best" Moot Court programs in the country. Each year, the top 16 schools in the country are invited to participate based on outstanding performance in other Moot Court competitions during the preceding academic year.
