UC Hastings Students Win in Final Round of International Competition for Mediation Advocacy



Mark Brown '12, Charles Hunter '11, Jennifer Takehana '12, and Tim Crawley '11 are the champions of the 2011 International Competition for Mediation Advocacy, held in Toronto, Canada March 8-11. En route to their victory, the team forged through one of the toughest arrays of competitors ever seen at one competition.

Among the 24 teams participating were Canadian National champions University of Ottawa; ABA Negotiation National Champions Texas Wesleyan; ICC Paris Champions Fordham University; and IADR Chicago Co-Champions Chapman University and Osgoode Hall at York University.

The UC Hastings students also received the International Academy of Mediators award for best Mediation Advocacy.

In addition to winning the competition, UC Hastings and its Center for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution (CNDR) also received the prestigious Louise Otis Award for Excellence in Mediation Education. UC Hastings was recognized as the school "demonstrating the greatest commitment to mediation education."

The Negotiation and Mediation Team has won a number of competitions in 2011.

ABA Regional Representation in Mediation Competition

Two UC Hastings students won in the final round in the ABA Regional Representation in Mediation Competition held on March 6 at the University of Idaho School of Law. The team of Stephanie J. Chan '12 and Melanie Desbiens-Sugarbroad '12 defeated their UC Hastings opponents, Alicia Jovais '13 and Nick Campbell '13.

Out of 12 teams, UC Hastings took first, second, and third places. The first-place team, Melanie and Stephanie, will go on to compete in the ABA National Representation in Mediation competition at the ABA Section on Dispute Resolution's Annual Spring Conference in Denver beginning April 13..

Liberty University School of Law's Annual National Negotiations Tournament

UC Hastings traveled to Lynchburg, VA to compete in Liberty University School of Law's Annual National Negotiations Tournament from January 28-29. Twelve teams from seven different schools competed, and UC Hastings' team of Jennifer Takehana and Caitlin Tallon '12 took second place.

ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition Paris

UC Hastings traveled to Paris, France to compete in the International Chamber of Commerce's sixth annual Commercial Mediation Competition. In a five-day tournament, which began on February 11, and with 58 different teams, UC Hastings placed third. Students Mark Brown, Helen Theung '12, Kelsey Quaranto '12 and Yaeri Kim made up the team.

ABA National Negotiation Competition

Students Ryan Cunningham '11 and Christoffer Lee '11 competed in the February 11-12 ABA National Negotiation Competition in Atlanta during the ABA's annual meeting. Ryan and Chris competed in the ABA Regional Negotiation competition in Denver from November 13-14, 2010 to win their invitation to participate on the National level.
