“It’s just a wonderful experience to be here,” said Justice Baxter. “I’ll forever be grateful to UC Hastings for the foundation that it provided me and my classmates.”
“I’m very proud and pleased to say that UC Hastings is very much a part of my roots,” added Justice Corrigan. “In addition to going to school here, I was very pleased to be on the adjunct faculty here for many years teaching trial practice, and often did so in this room.“
CA Supreme Court Special Oral Argument Session

University of California Hastings College of the Law was honored to welcome the California Supreme Court to the Justice Marvin & Jane Baxter Appellate Justice Center on Wednesday, September 7, 2011. The date marked Justice Goodwin Liu’s second day on the bench, and the first time in recent history that the state’s high court has held oral argument at UC Hastings.

Opening remarks were made by Chief Justice Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye and Frank H. Wu, UC Hastings Chancellor and Dean.
“This is law school at its best,” said Dean Wu, “the opportunity to see law at work, in action, applied in the real world.”
“Many of our law school graduates enter into the practice unfamiliar with the structure of state courts and the nature of state laws,” said Justice Cantil-Sakauye. “That’s unfortunate because the vast majority of cases – as much as 98% of the nation’s legal disputes – are resolved at the state court level.”
Justice Cantil-Sakauye went on to commend Court Executive Office Fritz K. Ohlrich for his work in facilitating the special session, and recognized proud UC Hastings alumnus Justice Carol A. Corrigan and Justice Marvin Baxter. Justice Cantil-Sakauye extended special thanks to Justice Baxter, for whom, along with his wife Jane, the Appellate Justice Center was named in January.

Justice Corrigan complimented and thanked Justice Marvin and Jane Baxter “on behalf of generations of students and faculty” for their “tremendous contribution to the law school.”
