Flexible Enrollment Options

We recognize that individuals interested in the MSL program will have different commitments on their time.  To accommodate these varying needs, the MSL program at UC Hastings is offered both on a full-time and a part-time basis.  Course requirements are the same for both programs.

Full-Time Program

Full-time students will be expected to complete their degree requirements in one academic year (two consecutive semesters).  Full-time course work typically includes completing 12-14 units a semester. Because of the intensive nature of the course work, full-time students are not encouraged to work during the academic year.

Most full-time students who will take part in the MSL program will live off-campus, where there are literally thousands of options available in different San Francisco neighborhoods at various price ranges.  Current UC Hastings students live in The Tenderloin, The Castro, South of Market (known as SOMA), Nob Hill, the Pan Handle, Hayes Valley, Russian Hill, Potrero Hill, Bernal Heights, the Inner Sunset, and even in the East Bay.  Since Hastings is easily accessible by public transportation, students do not need a car to live off-campus.  Hastings is approximately a three-minute walk from the Civic Center, a major stop for both the MUNI (within San Francisco) and the BART (regional, including East Bay) transit systems. The College also owns a parking garage one block from campus for students who drive.

Off-campus housing is coordinated by the UC Hastings Student Information Center (SIC).  The SIC produces the Off-Campus Housing Guide, which is available in pdf format at www.uchastings.edu/housing/index.html

The SIC also hosts the online UCH Housing Board, which both new and returning students are welcome to use for finding apartments and roommates.  The Housing Board is a Google-based discussion site and it works best with Gmail accounts.  Once you are admitted to the MSL program, you will be sent an invitation to join the Housing Board.

Part-Time Program

The part-time MSL program is meant to accommodate working professionals who cannot complete their degree requirements in one academic year.  Part-time MSL students must complete their degree requirements within four years of enrolling in the program. Students enrolling part time will take at least six units a semester (“half time”) in order to be eligible for financial aid.
