Hastings Hosts Hiring & Talent Management Symposium

On December 16, 2009, Hastings hosted a symposium that looked at the pressures for change in the way law firms identify, train and advance new talent.
The program's two panels explored new models advocated by law firm management and leading scholars. Videos of each panel are available for viewing; you can access links to each at the bottom of the news story.
James Leipold, the Executive Director of NALP, moderated the first panel, "Identifying Talent: Credentials vs. Competencies." The panelists were UC Berkeley Law Professor Marjorie Shultz, co-author of the groundbreaking new study on predictors for successful lawyering; Professor William Henderson of Indiana University Maurer School of Law; and Matthew Harrison of Latham & Watkins.
The second panel presented an overview of "New Models in Advancement and Training," moderated by Carl Leonard '68, founder of the Hildebrandt Institute and a leading consultant at Hildebrandt Consulting. Henry Bunsow, Managing Partner of the Northern California offices of Howrey; Maureen Sheehy, Managing Partner of Townsend; and Jack Nelson, Executive Committee Member of Reed Smith shared perspectives on the novel roads their firms are taking in the training and advancement of associates.
