Prof. Hadar Aviram Honored with Rutter Award

The University of California Hastings College of the Law is proud to announce that Professor Hadar Aviram is to be honored with the 2010 Rutter Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu said, "It shows both the modesty of Professor Aviram and the strength of our faculty that her words upon learning of the award were, 'But there are so many great teachers here at Hastings.'" He continued, "Professor Aviram joined the UC Hastings Law faculty in 2007, and has since stood out as a truly gifted teacher, winning the praise of students, despite tough standards, and the admiration of her colleagues. Her work shows law within its social context, which is crucial for any future lawyer who wishes to do justice."

Professor Aviram was selected for the award by a committee comprised of Frank H. Wu, Chancellor and Dean; Shauna I. Marshall, Academic Dean; Professor Robin Feldman, 2009 Rutter Award recipient; alum Adam Maldonado '09; and Derrick Tyler '11, current ASUCH President.

Professor Aviram teaches courses in criminal procedure, criminal justice, law and society, criminology, political sociology, and social movements.  Her current research interests include the criminal justice system, social stratification, and social movements. She received her LL.B., Magna cum Laude, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; an M.A. in Criminology, Summa cum Laude, also from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; and a Ph.D. in Jurisprudence and Social Policy from UC Berkeley, where she studied as a Fulbright Fellow and a Regents Intern. She practiced as a military defense attorney in the Israel Defense Forces for five years and has also taught at Tel Aviv University.

The Rutter Award is generously sponsored by William Rutter, founder of the Rutter Group, one of the leading legal publishing companies in the U.S.  The official presentation of this year's award will take place on October 18th at 3:30 pm in the Alumni Reception Center at UC Hastings. The reception is open to UC Hastings faculty, staff, and students and will include remarks from members of the UC Hastings community.
