Professor Chimène Keitner Elected to American Law Institute

University of California Hastings College of the Law is pleased to announce that Professor Chimène Keitner has been elected to the American Legal Institute (ALI).

The ALI is a professional, nonprofit organization that exists to “clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law.” Its distinguished members serve on committees with other legal academics, judges and practitioners to influence the development of the law in new and emerging fields.

Keitner holds a bachelor’s degree in history and literature from Harvard, a JD from Yale, and a doctorate in international relations from Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. During law school, she was a student director of the immigration clinic, and an editor of the Yale Law Journal and the Yale Journal of International Law.

After law school, Keitner clerked for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada and spent three and a half years in private practice in San Francisco, where she represented plaintiffs in employment discrimination and consumer fraud class actions.

Keitner’s research focuses on cutting-edge issues at the intersection of international law and domestic litigation. She is the author of a book, The Paradoxes of Nationalism, and over twenty articles, essays, and book chapters on questions surrounding the relationship among law, communities, and borders.

Professor Keitner joins a long list of UC Hastings faculty who have been honored with membership in the prestigious ALI. Chancellor & Dean Emeritus Mary Kay Kane and Professor Geoffrey C. Hazard, Jr., are members of the ALI Council. Professor Hazard served as Director of the ALI from 1984-1999.
