3L Jessica Owen has been awarded one of the 15 California Bar Foundation’s Public Interest Bar Exam Scholarships, which covers the cost of a bar preparation course for deserving graduates entering public service.
Owen did the Criminal Law Concentration at UC Hastings, and will enter the California Department of Justice Attorney General’s Honors Program in September. The honors program provides promising DOJ candidates two years of employment, with a chance to do policy work. Owen will work in Los Angeles handling appeals for criminal cases. “This is my dream job,” she said.

A native of Crescent City, CA, Owen came to UC Hastings “because I was interested in public service work.” While at UC Hastings, she has served as a judicial extern in Del Norte County, as an Equal Justice Works Fellow with the Family Violence Law Center, and as a judicial extern with the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California. She also won a coveted CALI Excellence for the Future award for receiving the highest grade in her Evidence class.
