Hillman on Sexual Assault and Rape in the U.S. Military

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. UC Hastings Professor Beth Hillman is a nationally-recognized expert on the topic, and offered four presentations about legal reform in response to the persistence of rape and sexual assault in the U.S. military.

On April 17, Hillman moderated and spoke on a panel about legislative reform to room packed with advocates, survivors, staffers, and politicians at the Servicewomen's Action Network (SWAN) Truth and Justice Summit in Washington, D.C. She met with a group of Congressional staff members who are drafting bills that could fundamentally change the way in which military crimes are prosecuted and appealed.

Hillman lectured and answered the questions of about 90 undergraduate and graduate students at a Villanova University event in Philadelphia, PA, on April 18, cosponsored by the Villanova School of Law, Peace and Justice, and Gender and Women's Studies Department on "The Invisible War and Military Sexual Violence."

On April 25, Hillman gave a lecture entitled "Women Under Fire: The U.S. Military and the Politics of Rape," sponsored by Scripps College and the Claremont Applied Women's Studies Program, at the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA.

Hillman will also join Congresswoman Jackie Speier on a Queen's Bench panel at the Delancy Street Theater in San Francisco on April 29 to discuss legislative reform, military sexual assault, and the documentary "The Invisible War."
