Sunil Kulkarni '96 was one of two new judges named to the Santa Clara County Superior Court by Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday.
Palo Alto resident Kulkarni, 41, has served as senior counsel in the University of California, Office of the General Counsel's litigation group since 2011. Prior to that, Kulkarni worked for 13 years at Morrison & Foerster, starting as an associate in 1998 and leaving as a litigation partner in the firm's Palo Alto office.
He got his bachelor's at UC-Berkeley and his JD at UC Hastings College of the Law. He is a Democrat.
According to the South Asian Bar Association of Northern California, he will be the first South Asian American judge ever appointed in Northern California.
