Via Judy Areen, AALS; Chris Chapman, Access Group; and Barry Currier, ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar.

Colleagues,

We are pleased to report the formation of a small working group to serve as a way to gather and disseminate information, organize arguments, facilitate making appropriate contacts, and generally providing guidance and advice on behalf of the legal education community regarding federal student loan forgiveness programs, and in particular at this moment, loan forgiveness programs for law graduates who practice in the public service or public interest areas. The ABA and the AALS played a key role in the adoption of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program in 2007. Phil Schrag, who will work with this group, was instrumental in this effort.

The co-chairs of this group will be Tom Sullivan, President of the University of Vermont, former Dean and Provost, and former Chair of the Council of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar; Leo Martinez from UC Hastings, Immediate Past President of AALS;, and Hannah Arterian, Dean of Syracuse University College of Law and Chair of the Board at Access Group. Members of the group will be Dean Liz Magill (Stanford), Professor Phil Schrag (Georgetown), Dean Ron Weich (Baltimore), and Dean Phil Weiser (Colorado). Thanks very much to each of them for agreeing to serve.

The executives and relevant staff of the organizations co-signing this letter will stay in close touch with and provide support to the group. Outreach to the relevant folks in D.C. will be done primarily through the Government Affairs Office of the ABA, which has a very good presence on the Hill and in the Administration, and Access Group staff.

We trust that this group can serve useful clearinghouse and advisory functions so that the legal education community can develop and present its positions in the most effective manner possible. We will be in touch as events unfold.

Thanks.

Judy Areen, AALS
