“Everything I ultimately was able to do in the world of law came out of my training at UC Hastings.” - Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr. ’58

UC Hastings College of the Law is pleased to announce the establishment of The Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr. ’58 Endowed Scholarship.

The new scholarship endowment, established with a $100,000 contribution from an anonymous donor, will provide scholarship support to students from diverse backgrounds who were admitted to UC Hastings through the Legal Education Opportunity Program (LEOP). See more about LEOP below.

The donor has requested anonymity, but did permit for the college to note he or she was inspired to establish this scholarship endowment by attending the 2013 UC Hastings Honors Gala, at which Willie L. Brown Jr. ’58 was recognized as Alumnus of the Year.

Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr. ’58 has shaped California politics ever since he joined the California State Assembly in 1964. He was elected speaker in 1980 and served a record-setting 14-and-a-half years, during which time he established himself as one of the country’s most powerful and savviest state legislators. In 1996, Brown became mayor of San Francisco, where he oversaw the city’s rapid growth during the dot-com boom. He remains a political force both locally and nationally.

“UC Hastings was wonderful for me because it was looking to produce real lawyers, not theoreticians,” said Mayor Brown in an interview printed in the Spring 2012 UC Hastings magazine. “Everything I ultimately was able to do in the world of law came out of my training at UC Hastings.”

“Willie Brown is a living legend,” said UC Hastings Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu. “We are so grateful for this anonymous donor who wants to both honor Mayor Brown and support students by establishing this permanent endowment. For years to come, recipients of this scholarship will benefit not only from this donor’s generosity, they will be inspired by the extraordinary career and well-lived life of its esteemed namesake.”

About the Legal Education Opportunity Program

UC Hastings created the Legal Education Opportunity Program (LEOP) in 1969 in order to make a top-tier legal education accessible to those who come from significantly adverse backgrounds. The LEOP program recognizes that the traditional numeric criteria used to determine admissions may not be sufficient indicators of academic potential for students who have experienced significant obstacles - educational, economic, social, or physical - that have restricted access to academic opportunities and resources.
