Fujisaki’s new position as Principal Attorney to Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye is a big change from her previous role as a judicial research attorney for recently retired Associate Justice Marvin Baxter ’66.
During her 23-year tenure working for Justice Baxter, she focused on analyzing legal issues and assisting with opinion drafting and review for cases before the court. As Principal Attorney, she will focus more externally and support the Chief Justice’s oversight of the largest state judicial system in the country. In addition to providing the Chief Justice with advice and counsel on administrative and policy issues that affect the entire judicial branch, Fujisaki will serve as the Supreme Court’s liaison to various bodies including the State Bar of California, the State Bar Court and the Commission on Judicial Performance. “I also look forward to supporting the initiatives the Chief Justice champions, such as increasing civic awareness and access to justice for all Californians,” Fujisaki says.
Having transitioned to her new job only last month, Fujisaki’s immediate goal is to “conquer the steep learning curve.” She continues to meet state judicial leaders, administrators and staff, and members of the Judicial Council and State Bar. In addition to communicating regularly with the Chief Justice, she spends a good deal of time on conference calls and in meetings, and as necessary drafts memos analyzing relevant law on policy or administrative matters that the Chief Justice must address.
The Supreme Court is a hive of activity, employing approximately 80 lawyers. Fujisaki is proud to be one of them, having served the public for 25 years through her work for the highest court in the state. “It’s hard to believe that I’ve been here for so long, but I have relished every moment. The work is interesting and always significant, and I’m constantly learning. The nature of the work encourages rigorous analysis and lively debate among the justices and staff attorneys, which is terrific!”
