As the Vice president of Legal Affairs for Nestlé Dreyer’s Ice Cream Company, Rosanna Neagle '81 ensures that the manufacturing and marketing of its ice cream products are legally compliant and reflect Nestlé’s policies.
“I make sure that all of the different legal issues that may come up in our go to market processes have been identified and risks addressed,” Neagle said.
Working for the world’s largest ice cream company comes with its advantages. The office kitchen is stocked with free frozen treats, and Neagle has never met anyone who doesn’t get excited when she tells them where she works. But not everything is sugar sweet. The ice cream marketplace isn’t what it used to be. “What consumers expect about what is in — and is not — in their food has evolved quickly over the past three years and has posed a lot of challenges in making sure that we are keeping up with consumer expectations while managing complex manufacturing, marketing and delivery processes,” Neagle said.
To meet the current demand for “better for you” products, Nestlé Dreyer’s created new products with smaller portions and fewer calories. The company’s Outshine brand introduced a range of bars made with fruit, vegetables or juice as well as 100% yogurt. A line of products called Skinny Cow also offers low-fat ice cream without compromising the taste. “We’re continuing to innovate around this space,” Neagle added. But her favorite product, the Häagen Dazs salted caramel gelato isn’t changing, thankfully.
Neagle values representing a product that makes so many people around the world happy. “I’m a consumer; I go to the grocery store and I see our products as well as what is offered by our competitors. It’s a lot more interesting to be at work everyday when you like the product that you’re working on, as opposed to something that you feel no personal connection to,” Neagle explained. And who doesn’t feel a connection to ice cream?
