When not mediating, Susan enjoys speaking Spanish and French and bicycling. / Nicholas Ulmer enters his 30th post-UC Hastings year in Europe, where he continues his international arbitration practice. ’78 Richard J. Hicks is now of counsel with Spaulding McCullough & Tansil in Santa Rosa. / Jennifer Keller and Tom Umberg ’80 have joined forces to establish a new firm, Keller Rackauckas Umberg Zipser, in Irvine. The firm is devoted exclusively to litigation; the four name partners have more than 300 jury trials among them. Jennifer was just named again to the Los Angeles and San Francisco Top Women Lawyers of California list for 2013. Tom is a former member of the California Assembly and serves as a colonel in the Army Reserves. / Effective January 1, Marilyn Klinger became the chair emeritus of Sedgwick’s construction practice group. / Gary Seiser writes: “After a career in government service as a prosecutor, superior court commissioner, and a senior deputy county counsel, I retired in 2012. I continue to co-author Seiser & Kumli on California Juvenile Courts Practice and Procedure (LexisNexis), but most of my time is now spent riding my cutting horse; volunteering at a wolf center; doing wildlife surveys based on tracks, scat, and sign; and playing with my granddaughter.” / Pennie Sempell writes: “I recently placed first in a national dance competition in rumba, cha-cha, samba, paso dobles, and jive. I published a Healthier Happier Life DVD series that is now in its second edition. The company was founded by Grover T. Wickersham ‘76, who serves as the chairman of the board. Michael was recently elected to serve as the chairman of the board of Jones Soda Company, based in Seattle. He was also nominated to serve as a member of the UC Hastings Foundation Board, effective June 1. / Joel Rubin writes: “I am pleased to announce that I am now a certified teacher of Radiant Heart Qigong, and I look forward to integrating the principles of balance and equanimity to the practice of law.” ’74 The Hon. James A. Ardaiz (ret.) writes: “After my retirement in December 2010 as administrative presiding justice of the Fifth District Court of Appeal, I embarked on a new career in mediation, arbitration, appellate advice, and strategic planning. I am of counsel with the firm of Baker Manock & Jensen in Fresno. My new book, Hands Through Stone { class notes } (Craven Street Books), is out now (and for those of you who are wondering, reviews have been good). Becoming a published author has long been a goal of mine, and I feel fortunate to have this opportunity. My wife, Pam, and I divide our time between Fresno and Carmel.” / Judith Mazia has been appointed to the UC Hastings Planned Giving Advisory Committee. She serves as associate director of gift and endowment planning at UCSF and as mediator for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. / Judge Michael Tucevich of Scottsdale writes: “I am nearing retirement next year—my 17-yearold daughter will be off to college and I plan on some serious single travel as an empty nester.” ’73 Don W.
