In a stunning unanimous verdict, the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in Murphy v. Kenneth Cole Productions. Professor Donna Ryu presented oral arguments for the plaintiffs in March. The case began in the Hastings Civil Justice Clinic and grew from a superior court trial conducted by Hastings students, including Sarah Beard '05, Suzy Delgin '05, Marissa Diehl '04, and Monica Hernandez '04.

California Lawyer magazine recognized Manuela Albuquerque '75 and Moira Feeney '04 as 2007 Attorneys of the Year.

Gail Bereola '79 was appointed presiding judge of the Juvenile Court in Alameda Superior Court. She has been a judge since 1992.

The East Bay Business Times named Malathy Subramanian '99 to its list of 2007 Women of Distinction.

A Foreign Service officer since 1991, Chris Stevens '89 is adviser on Middle East affairs to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee minority staff. In June, he will become deputy chief of mission in the new U.S. embassy in Tripoli, Libya.

Los Angeles Magazine named Steve Cron '73 a Super Lawyer in criminal defense for the third consecutive year.

The Alameda County Bar association is honoring Richard Waxman '78 with the Lawyer of the Year award.

The Litigation Council of America, a newly formed organization of top U.S. litigators and trial attorneys, selected Guy Kornblum '66 as a charter fellow.  

After ten years in private practice, Evan Sorem '96 now works as a deputy attorney general for the State of California, in the San Diego office.

Jeff Rosichan '88 is joining Deutsche Bank Securities as vice chairman in equity capital markets, working in New York. Previously, he directed U.S equity capital markets at Bank of America.

First American Exchange Company promoted Mary Kay Kennedy '83 to senior vice president for the Northern California region.

Penn Dodson '03 was elected president of the Georgia affiliate of the National Employment Lawyers Association.

Quoted in the Christian Science Monitor, Stephen Knight '96, deputy director of Hastings' Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, commented on civil rights issues in "Does the Prospect of Arranged Marriage and Abuse Warrant Asylum in the U.S.?"

Valerie Karno '91 is a tenured professor of English at the University of Rhode Island.

San Francisco Chronicle Magazine profiled Theresa Gibbons '97 for her work on urban beautification.

The Daily Journal published an article by Brendan Fogarty '91, discussing insurance appraisal issues and Kacha v. Allstate Ins. Co, on March 20.

Faculty News
Professor Radhika Rao received the 2006-07 Hastings Faculty Award.

Expert commentary from Professor Rory Little about the Attorney General/U.S. Attorney firings appeared in media outlets around the country, including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and several television stations. His op-ed piece, "Prosecution Politics," was published in the Daily Journal on March 22.

The New York Times also printed commentary by Professor Vik Amar on March 21 in a story about executive privilege and the dismissal of eight U.S. attorneys.

Professor Robin Feldman wrote, "Patent Misuse: From Inception to Modern Case Law," which appeared in Patents and Trade Secrets, Volume II, part of the series Intellectual Property and Information Wealth: Issues and Practices in the Digital Age.

Professor Ethan Leib published a book review in Perspectives on Politics and "Friendship and the Law" in the UCLA Law Review.

Professor David Faigman's essay, "Judges as 'Amateur Scientists,'" recently appeared in Boston University Law Review.

Interviewed on Sirius Satellite Radio, Karen Musalo, director of the Hastings Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, discussed the case of a young refugee woman from China who was sold into marriage to an abusive man.

Chris Knowlton, director of the Hastings Center for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution, was quoted extensively in the Daily Journal article, "Taking the Fight Out of Mediation."

The American Association of Law Libraries selected "Let the People Know the Facts: Can Government Information Removed from the Internet Be Reclaimed?" by Reference Librarian Susan Nevelow Mart as the best Law Library Journal article of the year.

Center for State and Government Law
Hastings' Center for State and Government Law announces that its biannual survey, Environmental Justice for All, is now available online.



Academic Programs
Willie Nguyen is the first clinical law fellow at the Hastings Civil Justice Clinic, supervising law students and co-teaching the clinical seminar.

Mediation Team Successes
Hastings' mediation teams won the ABA's Regional Representation in Mediation Competition. First place awards went to Angela Nalu '07 and Ashley Eckerle '08. Anne Gifford '08 and Tasha Matharu '08 took second place.

Mock Trial Successes
Coached by Michael Flynn '06, the Hastings mock trial team of Tammy Boggs '07, Alan Chang '08, and John Garibaldi '07, won the Prince Evidence Competition for the third time in four years. The team also won Second Place Brief.

The Hastings Jessup team placed sixth in the International Rounds and the team's brief placed eighth in the world out of 500 teams. Team members Vlad Kroll '08, Miranda Lindl '08, Nema Milaninia '07, Mari Overbeck '08, and Ben Wiles '07 were coached by alumni coaches Sarah Hines '03 and Marina Baginsky '04.

Student Awards
Sacha Crittenden '07
and Joshua Mason '07 each won a Rosenthal Bar Exam Scholarship from the California Bar Foundation.

Five graduating Hastings students are finalists for the federal government's 2007 Presidential Management Fellowship: Hyun Choi, Alexandria Fearn, Jens Iverson, Brian O'Toole, and Brandon Yu.

Hastings Hurricane Relief
During spring break, Hastings Hurricane Relief participated in the FEMA Trailer Survey and Mapping Project to gather information from New Orleans residents. Students also assisted trailer residents by placing phone calls to FEMA and to local health services.


 

Hastings-to-Haiti Trip
A Hastings delegation to Haiti met with human rights and grassroots organizations and governmental officials to help resolve the country's social struggles.
