Champion horse Curlin, owned by Barbara Banke '78, won the Dubai World Cup with a record-setting 7 3/4-length victory in the world's highest stake race at Nad al Sheba. Curlin now rules thoroughbred racing!

Al Wong '64 received a tribute for over 40 years of service to the alumni association.

The Class of 2008 elected Adjunct Professor James Wagstaffe '80 as the faculty speaker at commencement in May.

Molly Peterson's '98 radio project Finding Solid Ground  examines the security of New Orleans and Louisiana Gulf Coast residents after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Governor Schwarzenegger appointed Charlene Haught Johnson '74 as chair of the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority and Miriam Ivy Morton'93 to serve as San Bernardino County's newest judge.

Andy Green '06 made his debut on Hong Kong television as a spokesperson for Democrats Abroad Hong Kong where he debated the spokesperson for Republicans Abroad Hong Kong.

Chanelle Chung '07 is an associate at Steven Chung & Associates.  Before being sworn in, she assisted her father Steven K.S. Chung as second chair in a jury trial in federal court.

The American Board of Trial Advocates awarded George Ellis '65 diplomate status.

Joel Mark '72 was honored at the Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association for his work as president.

The work of Josh King '93 as general counsel and vice president at Avvo received high acclaim from Inside Counsel.

Campus News

After securing a unanimous victory last year in the landmark Murphy v. Kenneth Cole Productions case, the Civil Justice Clinic was awarded fees in excess of $1 million, likely among the largest ever awarded to a law school clinical program.

Moot Court continues as a winner!   Hastings' team members Chris Fredrich '09 and Gavin Gruber '09,alumni coach Mark D'Argenio and student coach Alan Chang '08 won the Traynor California State Championship and was named the best oral advocate team in the state.

Hastings' Lefkowitz Trademark and Copyright Moot Court Competition team won the national championship in Washington, D.C. and the team was named best oral advocate team. Team members Lisa Dornbach Flanagan '09, Alexa Hansen '09 and Laura Mastrangelo '09 were also the western regional champions this year and were coached by Kristen Ditlevsen '08 and alumni coach Vijay Toke '01. See Moot Court for more information.

Professor Richard Marcus

Receiving the 2008 Michael Franck Professional Responsibility Award from the ABA, Distinguished Professor Geoff Hazard was praised as a "towering figure in American law" with an "indelible imprint on legal ethics and professional conduct."

The US Judicial Conference Standing Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure appointed Rick Marcus reporter for a subcommittee of federal judges studying sealed cases.

Rory Little is teaching global legal ethics this semester at the University of Leiden in The Netherlands.

The 2008 edition of David Faigman's five-volume casebook, Modern Scientific Evidence:   The Law & Science of Expert Testimony, has been published by Thomson/West. Faigman also wrote " The Limits of Science in the Courtroom," a chapter in the book Beyond Common Sense: Psychological Science in the Courtroom, published by Blackwell.

Two recent works by Ethan Leib address timely political topics. "Interpreting Statutes Passed Through Referendums" appeared in Election Law Journal, and "This Is a Job for Superdelegates," written with David Ponet, was published in Legal Times. Another article by Leib, " A Comparison of Criminal Jury Decision Rules in Democratic Countries," was published by the Ohio State University Journal of Criminal Law.

"The Politics of Time in the Legal Profession," by Joan Williams, appeared in the University of St. Thomas Law Journal.

The fourth edition of Federal Courts, Federalism and Separation of Power, by Keith Wingate and collaborators Donald Doernberg and Donald Ziegler, was recently released by Thomson/West.

John Diamond was voted favorite professor by the Hastings class of 2008.

Professor James Crawford, a beloved commercial law professor and the first African-American law professor at Hastings, passed away in February. A memorial service is planned in Chicago on April 26.
