Alumni News Sedgwick Creates Trial Advocacy Team Endowment Thomas Miller '73 will lead the 2008 class reunion campaign. A distinguished construction defects lawyer for more than 25 years, Miller has vast experience, dynamic leadership skills, and a love of Hastings. Steven McCormick '76 is the newly appointed president and board trustee of The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Previously, he was the president and CEO of The Nature Conservancy. Russell S. Roeca '80 is president elect of the Bar Association of San Francisco. Akin Gump associate Sara Noel '03 was named an Outstanding Barrister for 2007, chosen from the 3,200 barristers within the Bar Association of San Francisco. Two Hastings alumni were recently appointed Superior Court judges: Mark Boessenecker '48 in Napa County and Rhonda Burgess '82 in Alameda County . The ABA Law Journal selected the Transnational Law Blog, written by John Dermody '07, Travis Hodgkins '08, and Nema Milaninia '07, as one of the top 100 blawgs by lawyers for lawyers. The judges of the Los Angeles Superior Court elected Scott Silverman '75 of Morrison & Foerster as the court's newest commissioner. Chambers Asia named Jeff Layman '97 one of Asia's Leading Business Lawyers. The Corporate, Securities, and M & A Lawyer's Job: A Survival Guide by Matt Swartz '95 a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman in McLean, Virginia, was published by the American Bar Association. The Japan Society of Northern California gave the Artistic Achievement Award to playwright Philip Kan Gotanda '78. One of Gotanda's plays, "After the War," was staged by the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. "East Asian Cultural Influences" by Grant Kim '84 was published in The Asian Leading Arbitrators' Guide to International Arbitration. California Lawyer Magazine gave Frank Hinman '91, John Wehrli '98, Jennifer Rampton '02, David Lunas '03, and Riva Kim '04 2007 Angel Awards for their commitment to pro bono legal work. Greg Brockbank '85, owner of Marin Law Center and chair of the Marin Democratic Party, was elected to the San Rafael City Council. Matt Joseph '79 published his first novel, Clouds Over Mountains. John Barrie '72, a partner at Bryan Cave's Washington D.C. and New York City offices, was listed as a Best Lawyer in America in tax law. He is also chair of the Taxation Section of the DC Bar and council director of the ABA Taxation Section. Josh King '93 works at Avvo, a Seattle-based consumer-focused website that rates and profiles lawyers. King returned to practicing law after working five years in senior corporate development roles for AT&T Wireless and Clearwire. Ruth Glick '91 was elected to the Council of the Dispute Resolution Section of the American Bar Association. Faculty News Professor Radhika Rao's article, "Genes and Spleens: Property, Contract, or Privacy Rights in the Human Body?" will be published by the Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics. She recently delivered two papers at conferences: "Equal Liberty: Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Reproductive Equality" and "Property, Privacy, and Other Legal Constructions of the Embryo." Professor Leo Martinez co-authored the new edition of New Appleman Insurance Law and Practice Guide, published by LexisNexis/Mathew Bender. Professor Ethan Leib's article "Friends and the Law" was published in Policy Review. For the fifth year in a row, Chris Knowlton was appointed to serve as a salary arbitrator for major league baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association.
