Alumni News Formerly the deputy general counsel of eBay, Jay Monahan '87 has joined Vuze, a Palo Alto company with an online platform for downloading movies, TV shows, and other entertainment. A front-page article in The Recorder described Monahan as a leader with a "pioneering spirit" who "has been blazing trails in the Wild West." The Bar Association of San Francisco honored Michael Kelly '76 of Walkup, Melodia, Kelly, Wecht & Schoenberger; Betsy Johnsen '91 of Law Office of Betsy Johnsen; and Sara Noel '03 of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld for their significant contributions to the legal community. Public Interest Law Fellowships The new president-elect of California Women Lawyers is Jean Stroud Pledger '99, a partner at Klein, DeNatale, Goldner, Cooper, Rosenlieb & Kimball in Bakersfield. Mark Hardie '97 published The King of Israel, a memoir chronicling his experiences in the Israel Defense Forces. Merrilee MacLean '82, a shareholder at Karr Tuttle Campbell in Seattle, was selected to serve on the Legislative Committee of the Washington State Bar Association. A judge since 1991, Martin Tangeman '78 has been elected presiding judge for the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court. California Public Utilities Commission Commissioner Rachelle Chong '84 promoted Robert Haga '95 to chief of staff. The Daily Journal published "Understanding Insurance Examinations" by Brendan Fogarty '91, special counsel at LHB Pacific Law Partners in Emeryville. Christopher Emley '67 was named a Champion of Justice, the highest honor given to a member of the San Francisco legal community, by the Bar Association of San Francisco Foundation and the Volunteer Legal Services Program of Northern California. | |||

Faculty News Professor Calvin Massey wrote the lead articles in two law reviews: "The Two Zones of Prophylaxis: The Scope of the Fourteenth Amendment Enforcement Power" in George Washington Law Review and "The Role of Government Purpose in Constitutional Judicial Review" in South Carolina Law Review. A national teleconference featuring Distinguished Professor Joan Williams will take place at Symantec in Silicon Valley on Tuesday, January 29, starting at 8:30 am (PST). Joan will be speaking to Symantec employees and many of our alumni who will join the call from other parts of the nation. As co-chair of the American Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section Amicus Committee, Professor Rory Little evaluates and writes amicus briefs for the ABA in Supreme Court criminal cases. He recently wrote an amicus brief for Commonwealth of Virginia v. David Lee Moore. Karen Musalo, director of the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, provided expert testimony in a case brought by Canadian refugee advocates challenging a U.S.-Canada bilateral treaty. The court accepted Musalo's analysis and conclusions in reaching its decision on behalf of the Canadian refugee advocates. Professor Ethan Leib's article, "Why Supermajoritarianism Does Not Illuminate the Interpretive Debate between Originalists and Non-originalists," appeared first online in the Northwestern University Law Review Colloquy and was later published in the Northwestern University Law Review. "The Era of Deference: Courts, Expertise, and the Emergence of New Deal Administrative Law," by Professor Reuel Schiller, was published in Michigan Law Review. Professor Frederick Lambert's "Commentary from a United States Lawyer and Law Professor' s Perspective on the Decision of the Chamber of Business Affairs" was published in the European Company Law Journal.
